The Institute was founded on December 23, 1929, in Kharkiv. It resumed its activity in Kyiv after a break caused by the World War after 1944. Its name and subordination changed several times during its existence.
It was named the Institute of Water Problems and Land Reclamation (IWPLR) in 2011.
Today, the Institute works in the system of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (NAAS).
The scientific potential of the Institute and its research network are made up of 117 scientists, including 12 D.S. and 46 Ph.D. as of 01.01.2020.
During 2016-2020, the Institute conducts research under the Program of Scientific Research 5 "Scientific bases and technologies of sustainable use of water resources and reclaimed lands" ("SUSTAINABLE USE OF WATER RESOURCES AND RECLAIMED LANDS") in the following areas:
- Scientific bases of sustainable water use, protection and reproduction of water resources;
- Scientific and technological principles of agricultural land reclamation development;
- Scientific bases and technologies of reclaimed lands use of humid zone
